What is a virtual Robots.txt?

WordPress creates a virtual file (as opposed to a physical file) called robots.txt. Whenever a browser or bot attempts to read the robots.txt file it accesses the virtual robots.txt. If, for example you go to the URL (supposing your domain name is example.com) http://www.example.com/robots.txt from your browser you’ll see the contents of the virtual robots.txt. If however you look for robots.txt in the root of your domain (using Filezilla for example) you won’t see a physical robots.txt file.
